Course Offerings
01 — Private Tutorials
Private tutorials are offered in all Lotus Learning subject areas at the family’s request. Subjects include phonics, grammar, writing, vocabulary, poetics, literature, Latin, history, philosophy, and more. Sessions can be scheduled for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes up to three sessions per week.
02 — Group Literature & Poetics Classes
Learners 8-10 years old can join the Mud Trilogy Literature Circle. In this class, we will read together the Mud Trilogy from Michael Clay Thompson Language Arts (Level 1). Not only will we discuss the ideas of each book, but we will study the poetics found in the books. This class will meet for 45 minutes once a week.
Learners 10-12 years old can join the Search Trilogy Literature Circle. In this class, we will read and discuss Treasure Island, The Call of the Wild, and The Invisible Man. Not only will we discuss the ideas of each book, but we will also indulge in vocabulary and poetics discussions and activities. Additionally, learners will experiment with writing about literature. This class will meet for 45 minutes once a week.
Learners 12-14 years old can discover the beauty of poetic language in classic literature in the Poetry of Literature class. In this class, we will read and discuss Michael Clay Thompson’s Poetry of Literature (Level 4) and try our hands at writing poetic prose. This class will meet for 45 minutes once a week.
03 — Writing Classes
Learners 8-10 years old can join From Sentences to Paragraphs. In this class, students will first learn to write strong sentences before being introduced to the basics of paragraph writing. Grammar and poetics will be integrated into these lessons; however, this class should not be considered a replacement for either subject. Students who complete this class will be prepared for Writer’s Toolbox A in a future semester. This class will meet for 30 minutes once a week.
Learners 10-12 years old can join Writer’s Toolbox A. In this class, we will experiment with various writing techniques and practices to use in both creative and academic writing in the future. Grammar and poetics will be integrated into these lessons; however, this class should not be considered a replacement for either subject. Students who complete this class will be prepared for academic and creative writing classes in future semesters. This class will meet for 45 minutes once a week.
Learners 12-14 years old can join Fairly Creative Writing. In this class, we will use classic fairy tales to learn about plot, characterization, and setting. Learners will practice and experiment with their own creative writing through several cleverly entertaining and humorously instructive exercises. If needed, a second section will be offered for older learners. This class will meet for 60 minutes once a week.
04 — Requested Classes
Lotus Learning is willing to create classes at the request of interested families. Please use the interest form on our contact page to share your class request.
Nota Bene: All class offerings are contingent upon enrollment. If a class does not run due to low enrollment, you may request the same class as a private tutorial instead.
Additionally, any group class can be requested as a private tutorial for those desiring one-on-one lessons.
