Write Now!
Write Now! is a new video series of short creative writing lessons for writers of all ages. As learners complete each lesson, they will practice skills such as observation, developing imaginative descriptions, creating characters, and more. We aim to release one short video per week through mid-December. Our first video “Five Ways of Noticing Things” is available now. In this lesson, learners use all five senses to observe the area immediately surrounding them. This sensory inventory is a great tool for writers who need a little time to enter into their own writing zones or for those who get stuck in the middle of a project. It is also a tool therapists use for grounding and calming an anxious mind. I begin nearly every one of my college composition classes with about ten minutes of free writing followed by this sensory exercise, and over the last few years, students have commented about how beneficial this practice has been both for their writing and for their mental health. I think doing this activity orally would also be a great way to pass the time in cars and waiting rooms. So, what are you waiting for? Check out “Five Ways of Noticing Things” and begin to Write Now!
Please note that we have designated the Write Now! series as made for kids so there will be no concerns about inappropriate interaction with other viewers as the commenting feature is not available.
