Fairly Creative Writing

Lotus Learning is pleased to announce the addition of a new creative writing course for twelve through fourteen-year-old learners. In this course, learners will use well-known fairy tales to explore plot, characterization, and setting. Each of the assignments is cleverly designed to help learners experiment with structuring plots, developing characters, and creating cohesive settings. In addition to writing fairy tales, learners will re-create those tales as works of historical fiction and explore what happens when adding an economic twist. They might also make Jello, but we promise it’s for a good cause.
The use of well-known fairy tales makes creative writing accessible no matter how imaginative or confident a particular writer is. Learners have the freedom to adhere closely to the original plots, characters and settings or veer off wildly into worlds of their own making. At the heart of every assignment is the core question: What if? What if the wolf is really a dragon? What if the prince is trapped in the tower instead of the princess? What if Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in the heart of a large city or on a deserted island? Learners will explore various choices and the implications of those choices in a supportive and encouraging environment.
